Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery)

Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery)

Blepharoplasty consists of a functional or cosmetic surgical procedure with the purpose of remodeling the upper or lower eyelid eliminating and / or repositioning excess skin tissue as well as strengthening the surrounding muscles and tendons. When there is a significant amount of skin on the eyelid, the skin can hang over the eyelashes and cause loss of peripheral vision. The outer and upper parts of the visual field are most commonly affected and the condition can cause difficulty with activities such as driving or reading. In these circumstances, upper eyelid blepharoplasty is performed to improve peripheral vision.

Patients with a less severe amount of excess skin can perform a similar procedure for cosmetic reasons. The operation on the lower eyelid is almost always done for cosmetic reasons, to improve the "bags" of the lower eyelids and to reduce wrinkling of the skin.
